Unable to Remote Desktop into Windows Server 2012 R2 Core

Source — Rowell Dionicio

Took me a while to figure out why I couldn’t remote into my newly created Server 2012 R2 Core server. Turns out, Windows Firewall was blocking my connection.

To view your remote desktop firewall rule run this command:
get-netfirewallrule -displaygroup “Remote Desktop” | ft Name,Enabled -autosize
My output looked like:
Name Enabled
—- ——-
RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-TCP False
RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-UDP False
RemoteDesktop-Shadow-In-TCP False
Now let’s enable remote desktop:
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”remote desktop” new enable=Yes
New output:
Name Enabled
—- ——-
RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-TCP True
RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-UDP True
RemoteDesktop-Shadow-In-TCP True
